Were presented on November 22 the two CSIL reports, Centre for Studies of Light Industry, “World Furniture Outlook 2014“ and the “Forecast Report the Furniture Sector in Italy, 2014-2016.“

The World Furniture Outlook 2014 report contains the analytical data on the mobile industry and forecasts the growth in demand for furniture in 2014 in 70 countries, including 35 European countries, 15 countries in Asia and the Pacific, 12 in the Middle East and Africa, 3 in North America and South America 5.

The Forecast Report the Furniture Sector in Italy provides an updated and detailed in the furniture industry and its prospects, highlighting both the possible risk elements of both the possibilities offered by future scenario.

The macroeconomic scenarios that form the background to the reports have been prepared by Prometeia part of a long and valuable partnership with CSIL and the International Monetary Fund.

The macroeconomic framework in the three years 2014/16

The international scenario assumed in the two reports CSIL is the following:

- The global economy is showing an improvement in the growth of the advanced countries accompanied by a slight downsizing of that of the major emerging countries.

- In particular, in 2014 the global gross domestic product will grow by 3.6% and the contribution to growth in the euro area will be positive.

- Uncertainties remain over the timing of “tapering“ of the Fed and the extent of recovery in Europe, where there remain some systemic risks. International trade will continue to grow at rates more vivid.

- Even in the medium term is expected to accelerate the rate of growth of GDP and international trade. Advanced economies will continue to grow as long as they continue the rehabilitation of the financial sector, fiscal consolidation, and it stimulated the growth of jobs. Emerging economies will face the dual challenge of slowing growth and intensification of the global financial conditions.

In Italy, the decline from the fourth quarter of 2012, both cyclical and trend GDP has gradually declined, but the third quarter of 2013 closed with a -0.1% from the previous quarter. The acquired GDP for 2013 is -1.9%, and is expected to improve only in the fourth quarter and average annual change of -1.8%. The reduction in the purchasing power of households recorded by the Italian continues to affect domestic consumption whose fall is slowing but not yet arrested, even gross fixed capital formation are recording a new descent that will take them to an end of the year -5 7% compared to 2012. The only positive contribution to GDP comes from net foreign demand.

The uncertainty for the next three years remains very high for both domestic issues and for the development of foreign demand for Italian products worldwide. In the absence of political and financial shocks, GDP will return to growth in 2014 (+0.8% in real terms), and then accelerate to 1.5% in the two subsequent years. Household spending will remain broadly stable in 2014 in view of the difficulties in the labor market and declines in disposable income in recent years. Only in 2015 and 2016 promises a recovery in consumption. The growth of GDP will be again the international demand due to the strengthening of the global cycle and increased price competitiveness due to the weakening of the euro against major currencies and the containment of producer prices.

The world market furniture

World consumption of furniture valued at producer prices (ie excluding the markup for the distribution) is about 420 billion U.S. dollars. The degree of openness of markets (ie the ratio between imports and consumption) is currently in the order of 27%. The main importing countries of furniture are the United States, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. Imports of the United States, after the crisis of 2008 and 2009, have recovered and in 2013 returned to the 2007 level. China has doubled its exports from $ 25 billion in 2009 to $ 52 billion in 2013. The other major furniture exporters are Germany, Italy and Poland.

World trade of furniture is expected to grow modestly in 2013 and 2014, after the sharp contraction in 2009 and the recovery in subsequent years. The estimates of changes in real terms in the demand for furniture in the main geographical areas are presented in Figure 1, which indicates a stagnation for Western Europe, but growth of more than 3% for the world, especially thanks to the contribution of emerging countries.

The furniture sector in Italy in 2014-2016

2013 is closing with an internal market in decline again but the last few months, thanks to the bonus furniture and the interest generated on the system home, are showing some positive signs. Exports continue to grow, but only because of the non-European markets as a whole showing a growth rate exceeding 10%. The growth in sales is not enough to prevent a further drop in the total turnover of the sector is around 12% at constant prices in 2012-13.

2014 will be another year of uncertainty for Italy. The growth of international trade will resume momentum pulling the export sector, but on the domestic market, the situation remains fragile. Given that there are political and financial shocks, and that the Law of Stability of routes bait without parliamentary amendments that take away resources from the economy and with the confirmation of the bonus for the furniture in the mode of 2013, one can assume an arrest the decline consumption of mobile. Otherwise, the sector will record a new drop estimated at around 2-3% compared to 2013.

With regard to exports, in 2014 the growth that characterize the global scenario will have positive implications on the sales of furniture especially in emerging countries. Italian companies, however, must also be ready to intercept the positive signals that will start to come from the European Union countries. In 2014, therefore, it is expected export growth of 3% at constant prices. The joint positive sales trends in foreign markets and the stability of the internal market will lead to an increase in the value of production amounted to 2% in real terms.

In 2015, with a stronger growth in international trade is expected to be higher foreign demand for the sector and domestic demand will begin to show signs of recovery. Domestic consumption will still be held back on the performance in employment and disposable income growth is not yet sufficient to determine a real consumption growth. Attitudes will remain cautious in spending and households to increase their savings will provide more than to raise the propensity to consume.

In 2016 the Italian economy will start growing again at a pace of around 1, 5% driven by internal demand. The resumption of growth in disposable income (+1.8% at constant prices), supported by a recovery in employment (+0.6%) and a moderate inflation further enhance the confidence of households. This will result in an increase in the consumption of furniture 2% at constant prices. www.csilmilano.it
