On 21st November 2014 at the Palazzo delle Stelline Congress Center in Milan three CSIL Reports were presented: World Furniture Outlook 2015, the Forecast Report on the Furniture Industry in Italy from 2015 to 2017 and the Africa Furniture Outlook.

The World Furniture Outlook 2015 report contains analytical data on the furniture industry and forecasts on the growth in furniture demand in 2015 and 2016 in 70 countries, including: 35 European countries, 15 countries in Asia and the Pacific, 12 in the Middle East and Africa, 3 in North America and 5 in South America.

The Forecast Report on the Furniture Industry in Italy provides an updated and detailed landscape of the furniture industry and its prospects highlighting both the possible elements of risk and the opportunities offered by the future scenario. The 2014 edition presents itself a new graphics in a new format enriched with tables and charts. The study also includes an analysis of the following segments: upholstered furniture, kitchen furniture, home furniture and office furniture with preliminary data for 2014 and forecasts for 2017 about production, export, domestic consumption and imports.

The Africa Furniture Outlook report presents an overview of the African market of furniture with data on production, consumption, imports, exports and growth forecasts of demand for the 2015-2016 biennium for 54 African countries. This first edition provides an analysis for the entire area and sheets for each country that give a scenario of opportunities for exporters in these countries.

The macroeconomic scenarios that form the backdrop to the Reports were processed by Prometeia as part of a long and valuable collaboration with CSIL and the International Monetary Fund.

The macroeconomic landscape in the 2015-2017 three-year period

The international scenario assumed in the CSIL Reports is as follows:

    • The world economy continues to grow but in a moderate and uneven way. In particular, in 2014 the global gross domestic product will grow by 3.3% and the contribution to growth in the euro zone will be positive, but still rather weak. While the US will grow by 3%, emerging countries will be affected by a slowdown in the growth rate compared to the previous forecast and therefore will support at a lesser extent international trade.

    • For the three-year period of forecast a recovery in the growth rate of the world GDP around 4% is expected.

    • The weakness of the euro should facilitate a recovery in exports of European countries and avoid a new recession, but it alone will not be enough. Household consumption will remain weak and yet the real engine of growth will be investments.

    • The downward pressure on international prices of raw materials will continue.

    • Concerns regarding the intensification of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the tensions between Russia and Ukraine will remain.

After only a quarter of stability at the beginning of the year, Italy fell into the recession that has been charactering it since the end of 2011. The GDP growth gained for 2014 amounts to -0.4%.

The contribution of domestic demand remains negative, with investments that continue to flex while household consumption at the end of 2014 records only +0.1%. The fall in household spending has stopped but we are still far from being able to talk about a recovery. The greatest support for the creation of GDP in 2014 will come, then, again from net foreign demand. In the next three years, instead, we are facing a little more remarked recovery in private consumption supported by an improvement in household disposable income, by an inflation that remains subdued and by a positive contribution from fiscal policy.

The depreciation of the euro compared to the dollar will push exports and will give greater impetus to the formation of GDP which is expected to resume growing in 2015 by 0.5%, to climb then above +1% in the two following years. Euro is expected to adjust around 1.23 dollars per euro from 1.33 in 2014, encouraging growth in exports of around 3.6% in real terms. Despite the weakness of domestic demand, imports will resume momentum, but to a lesser extent than exports, allowing the trade balance to increase.

Investments as a whole, instead, will start to grow again only in 2016, while those in machinery, equipment and transport vehicles should show the first positive signs already in 2015.

The world market of furniture

The furniture world consumption valued at production prices (ie excluding the mark-up for the distribution) is about 440 billion US dollars. The degree of opening of markets (ie the ratio between imports and consumptions) is currently of about 27%. The main importing countries of furniture are the United States, Germany, France and the UK. Imports of the United States, after the crisis of 2008 and 2009, have recovered and in 2014 amounted to about 29 billion US dollars. China has more than doubled its exports from 25 billion dollars in 2009 to 53 billion dollars in 2014. The other major exporters of furniture are Italy, Germany and Poland. For the furniture world trade in 2015 a modest growth is expected, after the sharp decline in 2009 and the gradual recovery of the following years. Forecasts of changes in real terms of the demand for furniture in the main geographical areas are presented in Figure 1, which shows an increase that is still limited in Europe as a whole, but a growth of over 3% in the world, especially thanks to the contribution of emerging countries.

The furniture sector in Italy in 2015-2017

2014 was again a year full of uncertainties for Italy and is closing with an internal market in decline again, despite the proper functioning of the furniture bonus that has managed to give a breath of fresh air to the area, but failed in bringing domestic demand in a positive situation. Exports are continuing to increase, both thanks to EU markets, which have started to grow again in 2014, and thanks to those outside Europe. The latter, however, are showing a slower rate of increase than that recorded in 2013. The growth in foreign sales will not be sufficient to prevent a further drop in the total turnover of the industry, which will be around 1.8% in 2014. Worth to mention is the increase in imports (+10%), despite the weakness of the internal market.

2015 will be a year of transition, in which the growth of international trade will regain momentum pulling exports of the sector, but in the domestic market braking elements will remain. Since the Stability Law goes out the parliamentary routes with a formulation that maintains elements for supporting consumption, one can assume a further slowing of the decline in furniture consumption. Improvements in household disposable income are not yet likely to have an effect of revival in furniture consumption and uncertainties arising from the general economic situation will push consumers to hesitate even for a few quarters, with very cautious in purchasing behaviours. As for exports, in 2015 the depreciation of the euro compared to the dollar will have positive implications on the sales of furniture especially in emerging countries, and will balance the expected downsizing of the growth rates of the demand coming from these countries. Italian companies will also enjoy the positive signs that will come from EU countries. In 2015 it is expected, therefore, an increase in exports of 3.1% at constant prices. The conjoint positive sales trends in foreign markets and the slight decrease in the internal market will lead to stability in production value in real terms.

In 2016, domestic demand will stop its fall and will start to show modest signs of recovery. Domestic consumption will still be held back by the employment situation and by the attempt to rebuild savings, rather than to raise the propensity to consume. Foreign demand will instead continue along a path of positive growth, resulting in a production growth of 1.3% at constant prices.

In 2017 the Italian economy will start to grow again at around 1.2% driven by internal demand. The resumption of growth in disposable income (+1.5% at constant prices), supported by a recovery in employment (+0.8%) and a still moderate inflation will further enhance the confidence of households. This will result in an increase in the consumption of furniture of 2% at current prices.

The furniture market in Africa

With 1.1 billion people and a GDP per capita of about 2,000 dollars, Africa has a total household consumption of 1.4 billion US dollars. Consumer demand has grown rapidly over the past decade, thanks to an increase in real income. With 16% of the total population of the world, Africa accounts for 3% to global GDP and starting from 2000 the GDP per capita in Africa has grown rapidly.

Apparent consumption of furniture (valued at producer prices excluding the mark-up for the distribution) is equal to about 10 billion US dollars in 2013, representing about 2% of world consumption of furniture.

The total imports of furniture in Africa (both from other African countries and from other regions of the world) amounted to 3.6 billion US dollars. The ten main importers of furniture are: South Africa, Angola, Morocco, Libya, Nigeria, Algeria, Kenya, Egypt, Ghana and Sudan.

The growth prospects of African economies for the foreseeable future are very interesting. Africa as a whole has large availability of resources (mining, energy and agriculture). For 35 African countries (out of 54) an average GDP growth of more than 5% per year in real terms for the years 2014 to 2016 is expected, this compared with an average growth of 3.7% for the world economy. Therefore, the outlook for the furniture industry in Africa are favourable.
